We in America do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.
— Thomas Jefferson
From RTC member and Selectman Paul Szatkowski
Have you ever thought about offering your expertise to the Town of Bethel?
Public Service by our residents within our Town is always needed. With public service volunteers, an input of invaluable expertise is provided as well as a method for residents to participate in the Town’s government.
I know there are those individuals who do not want to campaign or participate in the election process. However, they do want to be active within our government. For these individuals, there are occasions which local residents have been appointed to various committees, task forces or commissions.
Some of these appointed positions can be found in:
- Affordable Housing Task Force
- Building Committees
- Commission on Aging
- Cable TV advisory Council
- Deer Alliance Committee
- Ethics Commission
- Housing Authority
- Insurance and Pension Commission
- Justice of the Peace
- Library Board of Directors
- Park and Recreation Commission
- Youth Commission
Vacancies in these appointments often occur after the expiration of established term limits. Interested individuals in these positions are recommended by our Republican Town Committee. These recommendations are then forwarded to the Board of Selectman for approval.
For those registered Republican Bethel residents who are interested in seeking a public office on diverse Boards or Commissions, the following positions are secured by election:
- Board of Selectmen
- Town Clerk
- Town Treasurer
- Board of Education
- Board of Finance
- Planning and Zoning Commission
- Inland Wetlands Commission
- Police Commission
- Board of Assessment
- Zoning Board of Appeals
